Goal

Redesign & develop the Freight Carriers Association of Canada's website to be bilingual – English & French – and have an automated workflow for the admin staff.

Context

The Freight Carriers Association of Canada (FCA) has been a trusted presence in the trucking industry for over 60 years. As the country’s only independent provider of a weekly Fuel Index, they offer reliable, subscription-based data to help companies navigate changes in diesel fuel costs. Known for their consistency and accuracy, FCA continues to support carriers, suppliers, and shippers with insights that impact day-to-day operations and long-term planning.

We worked with the Freight Carriers Association of Canada to modernize and simplify their digital experience for both members and internal teams. For subscribers, we designed a secure portal where users can access current and historical fuel index data, receive weekly bulletins, and request API access for seamless integration with their own systems. On the admin side, we developed a custom dashboard that simplifies the process of managing fuel updates, newsletters, and subscriber data — all from one centralized platform. Did we mention it was bilingual in French and English???

Before & After

The Client Says

Without a doubt, the most impressive quality of Ankit Designs Inc. is the professional but completely personable nature of the people we dealt with. Nothing was ever lost to 'tech speak' and we were never 'talked down to' as non-technical users. Discussions were always serious, but with a touch of fun and humour to keep it real. And their finished product documentation was thorough and meticulous.

Bilingual Website

As a national not-for-profit organization serving all of Canada, it was essential for FCA Fuel’s website to be fully accessible in both English and French. Bilingual websites often pose unique challenges—especially around keeping content up to date in both languages. Previously, the FCAC team found it difficult and time-consuming to manually update French content alongside English updates, leading to inconsistent information and hesitancy to make changes.

With the new website, we implemented a translation plugin that automatically translates new content, allowing the team to update information in one language and review translations only as needed. This streamlined approach made regular website updates simple and efficient, empowering the FCAC team to keep their site updated without the burden of constant manual translation.

Key Portal Features

The subscriber portal is packed with valuable information for subscribers that they can quickly access from the dashboard. From the dashboard sidebar or the “My Portal” navigation dropdown user can manage their company information, API credentials, and access resources, policies, and FAQs. The key features are listed below, and accompanying screenshots are listed below that!

Subscriber Dashboard

Once a user logs in, they see the subscriber’s dashboard, which presents a clean, organized summary of essential tools and insights available to members.

Current Fuel Index

Users can access the Current Fuel Index page, which provides subscribers with a real-time breakdown of diesel fuel pricing for domestic and cross-border shipments. All figures are clearly structured, giving users the insight they need to make informed transportation decisions each week.

Historical Fuel Index

Subscribers can easily track fuel pricing trends over time, with side-by-side comparisons of domestic and cross-border data. It’s an intuitive way to understand market shifts and make informed planning decisions.

Mobile Portal View

The mobile version of both the Current and Historical Fuel Index provides subscribers with a clean, responsive layout that allows for quick access to fuel pricing data, whether it’s the latest numbers or a comparison of past trends. The intuitive design ensures users can easily navigate and view all critical information, whether on desktop or mobile. This was a critical feature that added even more value to the subscriber portal, subscribers no longer needed to go onto a laptop to view the data!

Custom Emails

We designed custom emails where subscribers receive a weekly fuel cost update every Thursday, delivered straight to their inbox, automatically! This newsletter highlights the latest diesel prices for both the domestic Canadian and Canadian-US markets, alongside key metrics such as cost impacts for different shipment types. With clear breakdowns of price changes and shipment-specific data, the newsletter ensures that businesses are always up to date with the most relevant fuel cost information. For quick access, the email includes a link to the full data on the FCA website, making it easy for users to dive deeper into historical trends and fuel index details.

Admin Backend

Fuel Bulletin Management

The Fuel Bulletin section allows administrators to input and update the latest fuel data for the weekly bulletin. With an intuitive interface, admins can easily manage and publish fuel index updates, ensuring the bulletin is consistently up-to-date for all subscribers. They can schedule, edit, and duplicate bulletins as needed. They can also resend the bulletin to everyone or break it down into groups, or even individuals, in case there was a delivery issue.

Application Process

FCAC admins can easily review and take action on potential subscriber applications as potential applications come into the site through the front-end application form. Admins can seamlessly add new companies to the system with a streamlined process that ensures all information is captured accurately and efficiently. Each application progresses through stages so that no potential application is missed. This streamlined process significantly improved the FCAC’s previous, manual and outdated process.

Newsletter Scheduling

Admins can easily schedule and manage the timing of newsletters, deciding which subscribers will receive each update. The interface also allows admins to review the status of previously sent newsletters, offering a streamlined way to monitor communication progress and ensure each bulletin reaches the right recipients without issue.
